(ET) Toadies share a new single and lyric video 'Damage' from their forthcoming new studio album The Charmer. The set is out May 1 on Spaceflight Records. It was done with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago and is among the few projects recorded with him before his unfortunate passing that have not yet been released. An extensive nationwide tour will support The Charmer through the fall with some select festival stops Louder Than Life and Aftershock.
"For 'Damage,' I wanted to capture that caged feeling of lockdown, when all we wanted to do was go out and be around people and have a fun night. I wanted to balance the darkness of the lyrics with an upbeat, fun tune. Sort of embody the confusion I was feeling at the time. 'Damage' is a joy to play live. Really gets the crowd moving." says frontman Vaden Lewis. Guitarist Clark Vogeler says: "To me it feels expressive but understated There is a great energy to the performance we captured on this track, and it's a blast to play live. It flies by in what feels like seconds."
The song is accompanied by a lyric video, edited by Sam Wainwright Douglas with stills from their sessions at Electrical Audio. "To me the record sounded monolithic, which suggested contrasty black and white so we've locked in to this aesthetic for all things Charmer" says Vogeler.
The images for the video were shot by Lewis' daughter: "My daughter Ruby (Faye Lewis) flew from her home in Brooklyn to shoot a few days of our session with Steve Albini in his Chicago studio Electrical Audio, and we loved her work. Her photos are featured on the album art as well as Damage's lyric video. I think she captured the live feel and energy of the session."
Albini's technique of capturing bands raw and live was the perfect match the for band's energy resulting in the classic Toadies sound, Vaden Lewis says: "No computers were used for tracking or mixing, just old school tape and razor blade."
